Characteristics.  This Mediterranean import commonly occurs in barley, wheat, seedling alfalfa and other winter cultivated crops as well as landscape and waste areas of California and Arizona. This grass primarily sets seed in April and May.

 

Identifying Characteristics. This winter annual grows to 3 feet tall with bluish-green foliage and weak stems that bend at their base.  The leaves are folded or flat to ½ inch wide and 18 inches long.  The flower heads are short, relatively thick, oblong and 1 to 3 inches long.  Young seedlings often exude a red pigment when broken at the base.

 

 

The flower heads are short, thick and oblong varying from 1 to 3 inches in length with densely crowded spiklets that overlap and are sharply pointed.
